Jet noise is actually painful to some

Re: the Feb. 14 article “Decibel level jacks up in debate over whether to host F-35s.”

In the article, audiologist James Dean from the University of Arizona’s department of speech and hearing sciences pointed out that people differ greatly in their sensitivity to sound.

My son has Asperger’s syndrome, on the autistic spectrum. After learning about the noise associated with the F-35 and that it is five times as loud as the A-10s that currently fly over us, he is wondering if he will be forced to leave Tucson after living here for the past 24 years – most of his life – simply because the pain involved will be unbearable.

Many individuals with autism have extreme hearing sensitivity and hear things more acutely than most of us.

Having the F-35 will do more than affect quality of life, property values and more in Tucson – it will actually hurt some people in our community.

Certainly this is not acceptable.
