F-35 noise will lower Tucson’s appeal

Re: the Sept. 25 article “D-M could be base for loud new fighter jet.”
Tucson is highlighted in October’s AARP issue as the best (out of five “best”) place to live. Among many other points, the article noted our rich and unique culture, great restaurants, affordability and wonderful mountain ranges with incomparable hiking and camping. Our funky Fourth Avenue arts district and the annual mariachi conference were applauded.
Unfortunately Tucson’s political leaders don’t seem to recognize the negative impact flying the F-35 Joint Strike Fighters out of Davis-Monthan will have on the university, the mid-town historical neighborhoods and longtime local businesses, such as our world-renowned Arizona Inn.
Once our downtown, university, local businesses and historical neighborhoods have been severely diminished by the deafening decibels and dangers of the F-35s, there will be no turning back — and no more listings in national publications saying Tucson is the best place to live.
