Ashton Carter–Misleading Congress with F-35 Nunn-McCurdy Recertification

Eric Palmer | June 3, 2010

The DOD’s top procurement guy Ashton Carter starts out his letter (PDF) to our elected officials, which recertifies the F-35 after its Nunn-McCurdy cost breach with a lie. Several of them actually.

He states that there are no alternatives to the F-35. This is untrue. He states that it is essential to national security. This is untrue.

He states that the management structure of the program is adequate. This is–given the history of the program–a reach or wishful thinking.

He states that the F-35 will provide critical capability to our warfighters. This is also wishful thinking. At what price Mr. Carter? At best–given the threats that are developing–if the aircraft ever gets delivered to our fighting forces, it will arrive obsolete. If anything the F-35 robs funds from our warfighters in current conflicts and overall operational capabilities.

Maybe this passes for truth in Mr. Carters world however he doesn’t have a leg to stand on with these claims. it is obvious that Congress will have to do more interventions in order to sort out the mess known as the U.S. tactical air power roadmap.

Removing those from office that mislead our elected officials would be a good start.
