Re: the Sept. 25 article “D-M could be base for loud new fighter jet.”
The new F-35 fighter aircraft will be at least twice as loud on takeoff and four times as loud on landing as the noisiest fighter planes that use Davis-Monthan. This is game-changing. The A-10 aircraft based here is quiet by comparison.
The Air Force environmental report for its Elgin, Fla., base states F-35 noise will reach far beyond 75 decibels, to 83 dB over housing and schools, rising to 90 dB in flight-path neighborhoods. (Every 10 dB doubles volume.) Other defense reporting says the F-35 can break the sound barrier while accelerating on takeoff.
The screaming F-35 attack aircraft does have an assured capacity to make a crippling strike on the future quality of life, property values, tourist value and the development potential of Tucson for the next 50 years.
