Don’t base loud F-35s in Tucson

Re: the Dec. 8 guest opinion “F- 35 fighter would enhance bases’ local economic impacts.”
Basing the F-35 Air Force jet in Tucson is a very bad idea. Tucson is an asset to all of Arizona because it attracts quality, high-tech, tax-positive industry. It does so because of its world-class university, its — surprisingly, for a rather small town — rich cultural opportunities such as a quality resident opera, its climate and scenery. Tucson is the jewel of Arizona. A deafening noise from joy-riding flyboys will do more economic harm than whatever modest benefit these flyboys will bring to the local bars.
The experience from Valparaiso, Fla. should be instructive. A resident there recorded the F-35′s noise, according to a news report, and said that noise levels would hurt property values and could cause irreversible hearing damage.
This should not happen to Tucson. Quickly, while there is still time, write to your representatives.
